A DESK IN THE BARN
Pam Frazier, Executive Director
June marks the beginning of summer when we start seeing more families traveling to Sedona. And June 15 marks the beginning of road work on Hwy 89A in Uptown. Don’t let that stop you from venturing to the Arts Center. Traffic will be accommodated in both directions at all times and we have plenty of parking.
Besides, Arts Center staff and board members are excited about the events coming up this month! We’re sure you won’t want to miss them.
June 12, 5–7 p.m. in the Special Exhibition Gallery
Ticketed preview at 4 p.m.
Nearly 100 artists have donated fabulous artworks measuring 12 inches by 12 inches for this lively fundraiser. The sale is one day and one price. All artworks sell for a set price of $250—some valued at well over $1,000! This is your chance to collect works by nationally recognized artists. We also like the idea that this modest price makes fine art available to a broad spectrum of collectors with just a minimal investment. If you want to be among the first to make your selection, tickets are available for an hour-long preview and sale beginning at 4 p.m. The public is admitted for free beginning at 5 p.m.
An element of mystery makes selecting works particularly fun. Buyers will not know for sure who created the artwork that appeals to them until after they have purchased it! You’ll be able to meet many of the artists here on site for the event.
Check the 12x12 web page for a list of participating artists and more details about the event. We hope to see you here!
The Spirit of Sedona
Sedona Arts Center Campus
The Spirit of Sedona is a weekend of ongoing demonstrations, interaction and cross-pollination of art forms across the Sedona Arts Center Campus. Included are ceramists, painters, sculptors, photographers, writers and dancers. Many exhibitors are on the school’s faculty. More than 25 artists will be demonstrating, exhibiting and available for casual conversation all weekend.
The weekend begins on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with a coffee, bagel and fruit reception; Lori Putnam as keynote speaker at 10 a.m., and a variety of activities throughout the day with more of the same on Sunday. Check the Spirit of Sedona web page for a detailed schedule. All events are free and open to the public.

Instead of fretting over road construction taking place in Uptown this summer—something we cannot control—we’re going to highlight it! The theme of our summer show is “Under Construction,” which features 33 of our gallery artists. Some very creative pieces are coming in that address the theme. To provide extra incentive to brave the construction zone (see above), we will be offering an “Under Construction” discount of 10% for all sales over $100; our current members will receive an additional 5% discount on purchases over $100! The Opening Reception, Friday June 5, 5–7 p.m., is part of Sedona Gallery Association’s First Friday Event and the show runs through June 30.
Also happening on First Friday:
- Poet’s Corner featuring Jennifer Sisoian and Henry Richanbach, 4 p.m. in Poet’s Corner
- Student Clay Gallery reception, 5–7 p.m. Be sure to see the students’ “totem pole” installed outside the Art Barn.

We want to welcome our new member artists who have recently been juried into the gallery: Agata Kijank (Mixed Media, Acrylic), Adell Shay (Fine Crafts), Deborah Stromsdorfer (Colored Pencil), Julie Bernstein Engelmann (Latex, Acrylic), Kimball Walker (Jewelry), Leah Donell (Jewelry) and Monte Voepel (Ceramics). The variety is exciting to see. Some of the comments from the jurors were: “great movement, expressive, rich, flowing, gorgeous, beautiful, unique.” We also want to thank our jurors for doing such a great job: Nancy Robb Dunst (Mixed Media), Monika Hilleary (Photography) and Polly Cullen (Pastel).
Gallery submission deadline is approaching. Don’t forget that July is again the time for our member artists to bring in their portfolios if they are interested in being juried into the gallery. The guidelines for submitting can be found on the website or picked up in the gallery. NOTE that from this July on we will be accepting portfolios only once a year and that is July. So now is the time to take that step!
