Poet's Corner

Readings: 4–5 p.m. every first Friday of the month.

September 2, 2016

Red Earth Theatre and Sedona Arts Center will host its September Poet’s Corner featuring the comedy of Phyllis Voren at the Sedona Arts Center on Friday, September 2nd from 4 to 5 pm.

Phyllis recently arrived in Sedona bringing her New York energy, contagious sense of humor  and more than thirty years in Show Business ("Don’t tell them that they'll think I’m old.")  She's performed in Films, Theatre, TV serials, soap operas, commercials and more.  She had a walk-on in Woody Allen's film, "Annie Hall"; was performing at the Comedy Store in L.A. with Robin Williams when he complimented her set  ("My finest moment!"), made a Ritz Crackers television commercial with Andy Griffith and ran into comatose old boyfriend, Michael Nouri, on a soap opera, when she was a nurse and he her patient!

"COMEDY!" Says Voren, "That's my passion.  Comedy for fun! Comedy for feeling good! Comedy for healing!!  When you’re performing standup, you're the writer, the performer and the director - then when people laugh at your ideas - well - that feels great!!  When you're teaching Comedy Improvisation, you're not just making people laugh, you're helping them to find their own funny!  That can last their lifetime!"

At Poets Corner she will sharing some of her writing including poetry, prose and of course her stand up. Phyllis will also discuss where comedy originates and where her personal material comes from, as well as some exploration of actual at joke construction, how comedy is written.  Voren explains, "There’s craft involved in writing jokes: you need an awareness of word choice, rhythm, specificity and a lot more."

Join us at Poet's Corner with Sarah Ann at the Sedona Arts Center on Friday, September 2 at 4 pm.
